Safety and precautions

Side effects and risks

  • Intense emotional experiences

  • Nausea and vomiting (traditionally seen as cleansing)

  • Anxiety or fear during the process

  • Interactions with medications, especially antidepressants (SSRIs), antipsychotics, stimulants, and some antibiotics.

  • Not suitable for people with certain heart conditions, bipolar disorder, psychosis, or epilepsy

Ceremonies should always be guided by experienced healers with proper lineage, screening, and support before and after the experience.

We prioritise your safety by offering a carefully held environment that includes thorough participant screening, a team with a strong healthcare background, and the guidance of an experienced mamita healer. This combination ensures responsible practice, cultural respect, and the proper support needed for a grounded and transformative experience.

Diet

A light and mindful diet helps prepare your body for a safe and profound experience. We recommend:

  • Consuming fresh, easily digestible foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes.

  • Avoid alcohol, red meat, pork, garlic, and heavily processed or spicy foods for at least 2 weeks before the retreat.

  • Minimizing caffeine and sugar to support clarity and emotional balance during ceremonies.

  • If you consume recreational drugs, please contact us before booking your retreat for guidance.

Full disclosure of all medications and supplements is essential for your safety.

Certain substances, especially antidepressants (SSRIs, MAOIs), antipsychotics, stimulants, or any medications affecting serotonin levels, may interact dangerously with yagé.

  • Please provide a complete list of current prescriptions before arrival.

  • Our team will review them confidentially to ensure safe participation.

  • Some medications may require a medical consultation or adjustment prior to ceremonies.

Medication

Preparing your mind and body enhances the depth and integration of your experience:

  • Reduce stress and avoid overexertion; prioritize rest and gentle physical activity.

  • Cultivate a positive and open mindset, setting clear intentions for your journey.

  • Practice meditation, breathing exercises, or journaling to support reflection and awareness.

  • Sexual activity: abstinence for at least 1 week before the retreat is recommended to conserve energy and focus spiritually.

  • Respect the ceremonial process, the medicine, and the guidance of our experienced mamita.
